Kensington Market & Chinatown Tour
Description
Meet up with your guide, who will soon prove to you his Toronto street savvy by taking you into Chinatown’s most charming vendors and speciality shops. Savour cuisine samples from many origins and marvel at the cultural variety made evident through the showcases. Thanks to your guide’s well-versed knowledge, learn the fascinating change of this quarter over time; originally a proletarian Jewish market, it slowly but steadily grew into a bohemian market and hosted the largest Chinese communities in Canada.
Kensington Market has a very similar story: it owes its splashes of colour and flavours to countless waves of immigrant settlers that arrived in Canada over the last 100 years. One can easily recognize most parts of the world at this thriving market. Oh, and by the way, the prize characteristic: not a McDonald’s or Starbucks in sight. It’s a true 100% marketplace. And it’s also beautiful: its bare brick walls are covered with layer upon layer of urban art and graffiti murals.
Check out locally-owned and operated eateries, shops, and produce markets and remember your favourite places as you are sure to want to come back later. Stop for a coffee or tea in one of the local cafes and sample one of the many international foods available in the neighbourhood at a local shop. You’ll live an unforgettable experience.
